Oropeza Health — Direct Primary Care
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a membership-based approach to primary care. Instead of billing insurance for office visits, you pay a monthly membership fee that covers most of your primary care.

This allows me to care for a much smaller number of patients than a traditional primary care practice. In turn, you'll have access to longer appointments, easier access to your physician, and care that's built around a relationship—not insurance billing requirements.

Who is Direct Primary Care for?

Direct Primary Care is a great fit for people who want a different kind of healthcare experience—one built around time, access, and a relationship with their physician.

Many of my members are looking for:

  • Access to longer appointments and unhurried visits
  • Easier access to their doctor between appointments
  • A physician who knows them over time
  • Personalized, evidence-based primary care
  • LGBTQ+ healthcare expertise
  • Care that is respectful, stigma-free, and relationship-centered

Whether you have private insurance, Medicaid, or no insurance at all, or you're simply looking for a more personal approach to primary care, Direct Primary Care may be a good fit.

How is Direct Primary Care different from concierge medicine?

No. Concierge practices typically charge a higher monthly or annual membership fee and continue billing your insurance for office visits. At Oropeza Health, your membership covers the primary care I provide, and I don't bill insurance for office visits.

That means I work for you—not the insurance company.

Why don't you take insurance?

Health insurance plays an important role in covering major medical expenses like hospitalizations, emergency care, surgery, specialist visits, and advanced imaging. I generally recommend that my patients carry health insurance to protect themselves against those unexpected events.

For primary care, though, I believe there's a better way.

The traditional insurance model often rewards shorter appointments, larger patient panels, and more time spent on documentation than on patient care. That's not how I want to practice medicine.

By working directly for my patients instead of billing insurance, I'm able to spend more time with you, keep my patient panel small, offer easier access between visits, and build the kind of long-term relationship that's at the heart of good primary care.

Because my decisions aren't driven by insurance billing requirements, we can focus on what the best available evidence says—and on what matters most to you. Together, we'll make thoughtful, informed decisions about your health without unnecessary barriers or rushed visits.

You can still use your health insurance for care outside Oropeza Health, including specialist visits, imaging, hospital care, and many prescription medications. I'll help coordinate your care whenever needed.

Do I need health insurance to join?

No—you can absolutely become a member if you don't have health insurance. Many people without insurance find that Direct Primary Care provides affordable, accessible primary care with transparent pricing.

That said, I strongly recommend carrying health insurance to protect yourself against catastrophic medical expenses. Health insurance helps cover unexpected costs like hospitalizations, emergency care, surgery, specialist care, and advanced imaging—services that are outside the scope of your membership.

If you don't have insurance, I'll help you navigate the most cost-effective options for labs, medications, imaging, and referrals whenever possible.

If I have insurance, why would I choose Oropeza Health?

Many people with health insurance still feel frustrated by their healthcare experience. Appointments can feel rushed, it's difficult to reach your doctor, and navigating referrals, prior authorizations, and high deductibles can be exhausting.

Oropeza Health works differently.

Instead of billing insurance for your primary care, you pay a simple monthly membership fee. That allows me to:

  • Spend more time with you during appointments
  • Offer easier scheduling and direct access to your physician
  • Eliminate copays for office visits
  • Provide transparent pricing without surprise medical bills
  • Build a long-term relationship so your care is personalized—not one-size-fits-all

You can still use your insurance for specialist visits, imaging, hospital care, and many prescription medications. I also offer access to discounted cash pricing for many laboratory tests and generic prescription medications, which can sometimes cost less than using insurance.

Most importantly, Direct Primary Care allows me to focus on caring for you—not documenting for insurance companies. That means more time listening, asking thoughtful questions, performing careful exams, and partnering with you to make informed decisions about your health.

Who can become a patient at Oropeza Health?

At this time, I provide care for patients ages 12 and older.

Whether you have private insurance, Medicaid, or no insurance, you're welcome here. Oropeza Health is open to anyone looking for a more personal, relationship-based approach to primary care.

At this time, I'm not providing care for children under 12. If you're looking for care for a younger child, let me know—I'd love to hear if there's interest.

I'm not currently legally able to care for patients who have Medicare.

If I have Medicare, can I still become a member?

At this time, I'm legally not able to care for patients who have Medicare.

If you'd like to be notified when that changes, you're welcome to join the Medicare Interest List.

What services are included in my membership?

Your membership includes most primary care services, including preventive care, acute care, chronic disease management, mental health care, LGBTQ+ healthcare, gender-affirming care, HIV prevention and treatment, sexual health, minor procedures, care coordination, and more.

See the Services page for a complete list.

What isn't included?

Your membership does not include services provided outside Oropeza Health, such as:

  • Emergency department care
  • Hospitalizations
  • Specialist fees
  • Surgery
  • Imaging performed by outside facilities
  • Most medications dispensed by retail pharmacies

Some laboratory tests, vaccines, medications, and procedures have additional costs. Whenever possible, I'll discuss those costs with you ahead of time and help you choose high-value options.

Can you order labs and imaging?

Yes.

I can order laboratory testing, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, MRI studies, and other diagnostic tests just like a traditional primary care practice. If you need a prior authorization for these, Oropeza Health will work on it with you.

You'll typically be able to use your health insurance for these services. I also offer access to discounted cash pricing for many laboratory tests and generic prescription medications, which can sometimes cost less than using insurance.

Whenever possible, I'll help you choose the option that provides the best balance of quality, convenience, and cost.

Will my insurance cover labs, imaging, specialists, or medications?

Usually.

Although Oropeza Health doesn't bill insurance for membership services, you can typically use your health insurance for services provided outside the practice, including imaging, specialist visits, hospital care, and many prescription medications.

I also offer access to discounted cash pricing for many laboratory tests and generic prescription medications, which can sometimes cost less than using insurance.

HMO plans: If you have an HMO plan, your insurance may not cover tests, imaging, referrals, or other services ordered by an out-of-network physician. If you're considering joining Oropeza Health and have an HMO, I'm happy to talk through how your specific plan may affect your coverage during your introductory call.

Will you work with my therapist or other members of my care team?

Absolutely.

Good healthcare is collaborative. With your permission, I'm happy to communicate with your therapist, psychiatrist, specialists, or other healthcare professionals so we're working together toward your goals.

I see my role as helping coordinate your care—not replacing the other important members of your healthcare team.

How do I get started?

The first step is scheduling a free introductory call.

Book an Intro Call

We'll discuss your healthcare goals, answer your questions about the practice, and help you decide whether Oropeza Health is the right fit before you enroll.

What if I rarely go to the doctor—is membership still worth it?

For many people, yes.

Healthcare has become increasingly reactive—many people only see their doctor when they're sick. I believe health is built over time through prevention, strong relationships, and care that's personalized to your goals.

Membership gives you a physician who knows you before something goes wrong. And when life inevitably throws you a curveball, I'll be here to help you navigate it and coordinate your care every step of the way.

Is Oropeza Health only for LGBTQ+ patients?

Not at all.

Oropeza Health welcomes anyone who values respectful, relationship-based primary care.

While I have particular expertise in LGBTQ+ health, HIV prevention and treatment, gender-affirming care, and sexual health, many members simply want longer appointments, easier access to their physician, and healthcare that feels personal rather than rushed.

Everyone deserves compassionate, evidence-based care.

Everyone is welcome here.

What does "soft launch" mean?

Oropeza Health will begin seeing patients in October 2026 as part of a soft launch.

From day one, you'll receive the same relationship-based primary care that is at the heart of the practice. I'll be able to see patients, prescribe medications, manage chronic conditions, provide preventive and acute care, order laboratory tests and imaging, and coordinate specialty care.

Because the practice is opening in phases, a few services may not be available immediately. For example, I may not yet have all point-of-care testing (such as rapid strep tests) or every in-office procedure available during the first few months.

My goal is to have the full range of planned services—including in-office testing and procedures—in place by the grand opening in January 2027.

The soft launch allows me to thoughtfully build the practice while providing high-quality, personalized care from the very beginning. Early members will receive the same time, attention, and access that will always be central to Oropeza Health.
